Teen Citizen's Academy Gives Youths an Officer's Point of View

Teens that want to know more about being an officer of the law can get a first hand look at many aspects of law enforcement.

Teenagers have the opportunity to see what life's like from an officer's point of view at an upcoming presented by the of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Set for April 20 and 21, the free, half-day workshops are geared toward those aged 13-19, according to Barbara Wallace, the crime prevention specialist organizing the events.

Designed to inform those in attendance about the inner workings of the Sheriff's Department, they're also fast-paced and thus geared to appeal to the short-attention spanned, eyes-glued to mobile phone crowd, according to Wallace.

Topics covered include crime scene investigations, demonstrations of K-9 and the bomb/arson units, along with , patrol and traffic, ASTREA and more.

The classes run 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with the first day set for the Santee station, 8811 Cuyamaca St., the second, at the department's Emergency Services Gillespie Field.

Class size is limited to 25 students and the last day to apply is April 14, you can print a registration form found in the media box.

Those who wish to enroll under age 18 must have their applications signed by a parent or legal guardian. They must also be attending school and earning passing grades.
