I'm glad no one was hurt. The question is, WHO had the right away? I see the students often ignore the pedestrian signal and walk against the red hand, unfortunately.

The driver was at fault. I am sure there are some students that ignore the signals and such. But this morning all 3 girls were walking with the WALK signal. How do I know? One of them was my daughter. She is ok but is at the ER getting further tests.

I agree with Kathy as I seen the very same thing. I also see in a lot of people disregarding the speed limits and either rolling stop signs or stop lights when they turn red or just blowing through them. Of course you see a little bit of this type of behavior anywhere you go in the county, but it is on a magnitude here in Santee that I don't see in other places. I have not seen a radar cop out on a Santee street in months again. Did they get rid of them due to budget cuts? I did see the DUI checkpoint maybe about a month and a half ago now. I was happy to see that, but am unhappy that there just is not enough speed enforcement to get this speeding problem under control in Santee.

So glad that no one was seriously injured. I see people speeding down Magnolia past Santana (and Cajon Park for that matter) all the time and I have also seen a lot of people run this specific light. They need to slow down and pay attention - it is a school zone. 25mph when kids are present regardless of how late you are for work or wherever you need to be.

I hate crossing at that corner because the drivers are looking the other way at the traffic and don't bother to see if there is anyone on the corner or in the crosswalk. I was there about 2 seconds after the incident this morning and it gave me the chills, I hope everyone will be ok & maybe people will slow down and be more consciencious of the pedestrians.

Deb, I am sorry to say that I believe you are hoping for a miracle. If there were a Sheriff's Dept vehicle posted where the drivers could see it I would bet the drivers would instantly become more careful as to how they drive, but then as soon as they are out of sight they would go back to their bad ways again. I wish people could be allowed to self govern themselves in these matters and some can, but for the most part we have to have Police Officers standing there telling people that already know how to act, but purposefuly choose no to in the right manner, how to act, just like how you have to be with a child that is always testing you to see what they can get away with. It is sad but true.

I remember the old internet joke how to have fun...paint your hairdryer black and stand on the sidewalk pointing it at cars. Thinking they see a radar gun they slow down. ;)

David, I did see on the news where the woman was at fault. I am sorry your daughter was involved and hope she is O.K. The news had said no one was injured, so I was very relieved to here that, was that not a true statement? My neighbor who was traveling the opposite direction and stopped when she say the accident, said no one was treated by medical personnel, so I thought, thank goodness the girls and driver were O.K. Again, I hope your daughter and the other 2 girls are O.K., I'm sure it was very scarey.

I really think the Sheriff Dept could write their quota, if the spend a couple of days a month. I can't tell you how many idiots teenagers, especially boys in trucks, turn onto Magnolia, off of Second, going 40 + mph. I am amazed they can even make the turn without rolling their vehicles. It is the same old thing of trying to impress their fellow students. Since I have lived in the same house in Santee for over 21 yrs, I have ONLY seen Sheriffs radar right next to the Parking Lot Exit maybe a dozen times and never at Magnolia and Second.

Good morning Kathy. Yes, the driver was at fault. Seems (not seen official police report yet) he ran the red light while making a right turn off Carefree onto Magnolia. News was a bit wrong on the injuries; all 3 girls were injured. 2 taken to the hospital by ambulance and 1 (my daughter) driven by mom. None sustained serious injury; all are pretty banged up and extremely sore this morning. There were paramedics on the scene (as was the school nurse) and while I guess no one was treated on the scene for medical needs they were triage'd and sent to hospitals.

I know this is all getting off topic, but I agree with the speeding trucks down Magnolia. However, it's not just the kids speeding down the streets. I drive a small compact car and am constantly being tail gated down the street and then cut off by plenty of adults running those changing lights.
Kathy October 18, 2011 at 06:24 PM
Wow, David, I am so sorry, I guess the media left a lot out, no surprise. I bet they are very sore but please make sure you have a full work up done on your daughter and she won't have problems in the years to come. My daughter was a passenger in an auto accident when she was younger, I didn't demand to have enough test done and she ended up having major back surgery at the age of 19. The surgeon said the damage was from the accident years before. I so wish I would of had an MRI done of her spine at the time of the accident. Your Daughter and the other 2 girls are in my thoughts.
