A routine traffic stop Friday afternoon turns into an attack on a Santee Sheriff's Deputy and an attempt to flee by the suspect.

A routine traffic stop Friday afternoon turned into an attack on a Santee Sheriff's Deputy and an attempt to flee by the suspect.

According to the , around 2:58 p.m. the deputy tried to pull over a driver for a registration violation in the 10000 block of Mission Gorge Road. The driver initially yielded to the stop, but as the deputy exited his car the driver reversed into the patrol car, ramming it.

The Sheriff's Department confirmed that the deputy was not seriously injured.

The suspect attempted to drive away, but hit a fire hydrant, causing it to burst with water. At that point, the driver left the car and ran from the scene.

People from a nearby shopping center blocked the suspect, which allowed the deputy to arrest the suspect, according to the Sheriff's Dept. The fire department shut off the fire hydrant shortly after.

A subsequent search of the Honda turned up more than an ounce of methamphetamine, Sheriff's officials said.

No other cars were involved in the crash.
