Trolley Delays in East County Due to Fatality on the Tracks

A fatal accident involving a pedestrian at about 2:30 p.m. put a crimp normal transit, but service is back.

service in El Cajon and eastward was halted Wednesday afternoon after a pedestrian was hit and killed on the tracks around 2:30 p.m., according to authorities.

The victim was identified Thursday morning as 48-year-old Andre Duff Zollicoffer of El Cajon.

The pedestrian was hit between the Arnele Avenue station and Gillespie Field station in El Cajon, and service was stopped in both directions after the fatality.

The Arnele station was closed and a bus bridge from the Gillespie Field station to the El Cajon Transit station allowed access to the rest of the trolley line. utilized the "bus bridge." Busses also serviced stranded trolley riders.

Service resumed to all affected stations at about 4:45 p.m, according to the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS).The victim died at the scene and his name was withheld pending notification of his family.

An El Cajon Police Department press release said that "preliminary indications based on witness statements are the victim walked from the trolley platform onto the trolley tracks and into the path of the oncoming southbound trolley."

The release goes on to say "the trolley driver immediately attempted to stop by activating the emergency brake and sounding the federal emergency horn. The pedestrian attempted to retreat to the trolley platform however he was struck by the oncoming trolley."
