Two Grass Fires Knocked Down on State Route 67

Sparks may have caused the two fires that were put out before they could spread.

Two roadside grass fires broke out Saturday along state Route 67 through Santee, closing one northbound lane as fire crews put out the fire within five minutes, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue.

The fires started around 12:15 p.m.—possibly ignited by sparks from a passing vehicle—on the north side of state Route 67 near Woodside Avenue, according to a fire dispatcher.

Several drivers stopped and tried to put out the fires before firefighters arrived, according to the Highway Patrol. A car pulling a trailer may have sent a shower of sparks onto a grassy area, starting the two fires, a dispatcher said.
