Woman Accused of Assault for Car Attack Pleads Not Guilty

A woman accused of trying to with her SUV while her children were in the car pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing great bodily injury.

Beverly Floy Gligo, 36, was ordered held on $100,000 bail.

Deputy District Attorney Ryan Karkenny told Superior Court Judge Charles Ervin that Gligo and the alleged victim were fighting in the middle of a Lakeside street Wednesday afternoon.

When it appeared the woman was getting the upper hand, Gligo jumped in her SUV and struck the victim, knocking her down, the prosecutor said.

Gligo then put the car in reverse and hit the victim a second time, according to Karkenny.

According to sheriff's Sgt. Scott Enyeart, Gligo then tried to leave, but her SUV became wedged between a tree and a fence post.

Gligo's two children -- an infant and a 4-year-old -- were in the SUV during the fight, Karkenny said. The children were not hurt, and Gligo's mother took custody of them.

The victim was treated for a leg injury and possibly lost consciousness, Karkenny said.

Gligo complained of pain from the fight and also was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital before being booked into jail.

Defense attorney Anthony Solare said Gligo has a minor misdemeanor record and is a lifelong San Diego resident.

He said Gligo's baby was prematurely born and she has been suffering from postpartum depression.

Solare told the judge that the alleged victim was the aggressor in the fight, during which he said Gligo got a black eye.

Gligo faces a maximum of five years in prison if convicted, according to Solare.

The defendant will be back in court June 15 for a readiness conference and June 21 for a preliminary hearing.
