San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded landowners today that the first installment of property taxes is due on Dec. 12.

"We are giving our taxpayers two extra days to pay their taxes due to the December 10th falling on a Saturday," said McAllister. "We are encouraging our taxpayers to pay online, by phone or by mail to avoid the rush and the long lines if they pay in person."

23 Tons of Pot

A half-dozen suspected international drug traffickers were behind bars today following the discovery of a highly sophisticated cross- border drug-smuggling tunnel running between warehouses in Otay Mesa and Tijuana, the second major find of its kind this month.

A total of 23 tons of bundled marijuana was stashed inside the deluxe passageway when the San Diego Tunnel Task Force found it Tuesday following a six-month investigation, federal officials said at an afternoon news conference.

Student Physical Fitness Tests

More than half of fifth-, seventh- and ninth-grade students in San Diego County passed all six areas of their physical fitness tests, state education officials announced today.

Statewide, only 31 percent of students passed all six areas, the officials said at a news conference at Grossmont High School.
