Las Colinas is Expanding- Now, Some Details

Now that the contract for the jail expansion is signed, the County explains some details about what comes next.

Now that the for the updated and of the in Santee, county officials are preparing to roll up their sleeves and commence work planning deadlines.

From the public's perspective, the first actual work on the $221 million
project would occur sometime in the spring of 2012, when grading, soil
importation and other site preparation work would be performed with the 45-acre area, said Project Manager Andrew Bohnert of the San Diego County's department of General Services.

He described the next step is working with designer and builder Barhardt Balfour Beatty to arrive at a "submittal strategy."

According to Bohnert, now that the contract is signed, work on designs can move beyond the concept stage to specific designs, with continued input, for example, from the San Diego County 's detention bureau.

"We're now in the  process of mapping out our permitting plan," he said.

The plans must be submitted to an array of government agencies for "review and permitting."

These agencies include the state Fire Marshall, the County's department of public works, coordination with the city of Santee's engineering department for assistance in construction of needed access roadways, and utility companies such as .

In addition, a board within the state Department of Corrections and
Rehabilitation has authority over construction of all state prisons and
county jails and must review the project, Bohnert said.

A plan for "information outreach" to inform an interested public is also
under development he said, but no specifics are available as of yet, he
said.

"It is what you'd expect from a large capital project," he said.

"We certainly intend to have an informational website and other materials on the project as its available and can be posted so people are aware of the project's basis."

Public informational meetings are also anticipated, but have not yet been formally scheduled, he said. Santee Patch will publicize those meetings when they are scheduled.
