New Grant Awarded for San Diego River Trail Through Santee

Santee has been awarded a $247,830 grant to help fun the construction of a 1.3-mile long multi-use trail along the river at the city's east end, which will be part of the San Diego River Trail.

The funds, which were awarded by the State Department of Parks and Recreation, will offset costs of constructing the trail in an area known as the Walker Preserve, acquired by the city last year. The trail in this area, which has been closed to the public for decades, might open in 2014.

“This grant ensures  that Santee will continue to make progress on the San Diego River Trail, which when completed, will be a major recreational amenity and improve our standing as a walkable and bicycle-friendly community, ” Community Services Director Bill Maertz told the Santee Review.

Santee was the only Southern California city to be awarded 2014 Recreation Trails Program grants.
