Plans Approved for Administration Building in Mission Trails Regional Park

The San Diego City Council approved a plan today to build a 5,000-square-foot administration building at the Mission Trails Regional Park Equestrian Center.

The city will spend $500,000 on final plans for a building with offices for park rangers, a kitchen, showers, conference room and storage space. A shade structure is planned for the exterior.

The building is the final phase of an improvement project that includes parking, a picnic area and restrooms in the 5,800-acre part on the east side of Fortuna Mountain, near Mast Boulevard and state Route 52. It includes four horse corrals for public use, trails and room for 47 cars and 15 vehicles with horse trailers.

Councilman Scott Sherman, who represents the area, said the project was needed because the Visitors Center -- on the opposite side of the park -- has no more room.

"It's been a long time coming," Sherman said. "Mission Trails is a jewel right here in the middle of San Diego, and for people who haven't been out there, I highly recommend that you go out there and visit some evening as the sun is going down, you kind of forget you're in the middle of the city for awhile."

No completion date was immediately available. The building was was approved unanimously as part of the council's consent agenda.
