San Diego County Buses to Be Equipped with GPS for Real-Time Schedules

The Metropolitan Transit System unveils a new system that will allow bus riders to text to see how far away a certain bus is.

The San Diego County Metropolitan Transit System unveiled a new high-tech GPS information system on Wednesday that will allow bus riders to text to see how far away a certain bus is and get more real-time information through Google Maps.

In attempt to save riders' time, the information available through cell phones, laptops and other digital devices is being beefed up and made more accurate in an ongoing partnership with Google.

Within the next month, riders will be able to discover when the next bus will arrive by texting their stop number to GoMTS at 46687.

According to the MTS and Google, this new project will make the county's transit system one of six in the world with real-time arrival information mapped on search results; other cities include San Francisco and Madrid.

Only half of the vehicles are currently equipped with GPS and will work on this system, but MTS said they plan to roll this out to all buses and in the next two years.
