Santee City Council Votes Themselves a Pay Raise

The Santee City Council voted themselves a pay raise totaling 10 percent over the next two years at their last meeting.

The vote for the pay increase at the Oct. 9 meeting was 4-1, with Councilmember John Minto voting no.

The Salary Setting Advisory Committee met last month to make recommendations to the council regarding the appropriate level of salary and benefits. The committee considered current and historical salary information and compared them to other cities in the County. They recommended a five percent increase retroactive to July 1, 2013, and an additional five percent increase on July 1, 2014.

The Council currently earns $1,456.64 each month, which would be raised to $1,529.47 and $1,605.94 in 2014. The Mayor earns an extra $998.25 per month, which would become $1,048.16 followed by $1,100.57.

The last salary increase for the Mayor and City Council was made effective Jan. 1, 2009. California law allows a city council to approve a five percent increase per calendar year.

COMMENT: Do you think compensation for councilmembers and the mayor should rise?
