SPARC Gives $10K to Keep Santee Teen Center Open

John Minto: "Without this check the teen program could have been shutdown."

The Santee Park and Recreation Committee (SPARC) presented a $10,000 check of funds raised throughout the year to the City Council at their meeting Wednesday night. Councilmember John Minto said the funds will be used to keep the city's Teen Center and teen programs operating.

"Without this check the teen program could have been shutdown," said Minto.

"We had to cut back on teen program in Santee, but it's a vital program," he said. "They need a place to go so they don't get in trouble."

The money was raised for the most part with the Santee Bluegrass Festival, an annual music and food event at Town Center Park hosted by SPARC and their volunteers.

SPARC members encouraged everyone to attend the Bluegrass Festival or buy a couple hot dogs from them at the city's July 4 event.

Mayor Randy Voepel added that the Santee Lakes (operated by Padre Dam Municipal Water District) has also helped with the Teen Center, for years offering the city $1 rent on the Teen Center building that is on Santee Lakes property.
