Secret Revealed on Grossmont College World Record Bid at Open House

Record for most individual contributions to a birthday card will be goal at 50th anniversary event.

Grossmont College, as part of its , has announced the Guinness World Record that will be attempted on Saturday, April 14.

Earlier this week, Rick Griffin, of the schools' Office of College & Community Relations, told La Mesa-Mount Helix Patch that the school had , "as a way to build some anticipation."

The attempted record to be broken will be the most individual contributions to a birthday card. Grossmont College hopes to break the current record of 1,468 people to sign a birthday card with their name and a greeting from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., which is the event timeframe for , April 14.

Grossmont College has created a gigantic birthday card measuring 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall.  The card will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 for members of the community, students, faculty and alumni to contribute birthday greetings and messages. 

In addition, for those not able to attend the Open House, people can “sign” the card via the Grossmont College Facebook page and have their name and birthday greeting transcribed directly into the card.

Like never before, Grossmont College is opening its doors over two action-packed days for an unprecedented, family-oriented educational opportunity to experience college, plus lots of fun at its free 50th Anniversary Community Open House.

Starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night, enjoy student musical performances and an old-fashioned Sock Hop Dance in the Main Gym with a live band playing classic tunes from the ‘50s,’60s and’70s. On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Open House will include a Department Fair featuring dozens of hands-on, interactive demonstrations and exhibits (a perfect activity for middle school and high school students), lunch from 12 gourmet food trucks and help Grossmont College set history with a world record attempt at noon. There’s something for everybody!

The Open House schedule also includes:

FRIDAY, APRIL 13

  • Student musical performances in the Main Quad, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (free)
  • Family-friendly “Sock Hop Dance” in the Main Gym, 7:30-10:30 p.m. (free)
  • Live music by “Footloose,” featuring classic tunes from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s
  • FREE Prizes and Giveaways
  • Food truck specials (discounted prices)

SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

  • Department Fair featuring interactive activities and educational demonstrations from college faculty.
  • Dissect a sheep brain, make your own lip stick.
  • Tour a crime scene blood-spatter room.
  • Perform CPR on a mannequin, get your arm in a cast.
  • Compete in a GPS scavenger hunt.
  • Attend cooking classes to learn tips about chocolate desserts and fruit and vegetable carving.
  • Perform in a poetry contest and use a collage and cut-ups to create a “Zine,” or homemade magazine.
  • Learn job-hunting techniques and how to make college affordable and get tips on enrolling in college, financial aid and transferring to a four-year university.
  • Make your own jewelry, ceramics and digital art drawings.
  • Attend youth sports clinics led by college coaches on football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis and softball.
  • Delight your taste buds at our Food Truck Festival featuring San Diego’s top 12 gourmet food trucks.
  • Help Grossmont College set a world record at noon in the Main Quad.

Music lovers, foodies, dancers, amateur scientists, artists, CSI fans, poets, fitness and health devotees, theater lovers, techies, gamers, math whizzes are all invited to celebrate Grossmont College’s golden moment in history.
