Grossmont School District Receives Unity in Action Award

The award recognizes the district's innovative programs to reduce bullying and promote a positive and safe school climate.

On Monday the San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition’s (SDRHCC) awarded the Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) with the 2013 Unity in Action Award at Monte Vista High School. The ceremony included an award presentation to Grossmont Superintendent Ralf Swenson by Deputy District Attorney Oscar Garcia, Chairman of the SDRHCC.

The SDRHCC's Unity in Action contest was developed as a way to recognize programs in our schools that promote unity, diversity, and acceptance.

The Grossmont Union High School District is being honored for its Camp Lead Program (Leadership for Equity and Access District-wide).  According to the district’s application, “Camp Lead is a three day and two-night leadership and human relations development program for GUHSD students. An engaging and interactive learning environment allows participants to gained heightened inter-personal and personal awareness skills that are essential to improving relations with others.”  Because Camp Lead is funded through a federal grant, a film crew will be documenting the program for presentation to Congress.

"This honor recognizes our ongoing efforts to develop innovative programs, such as Camp Lead, that are instrumental in reducing bullying and promote a positive and safe school climate," said Grossmont Union High School District Superintendent Ralf Swenson.

Two other local school programs from Poway High and San Elijo Middle were also named winners of the award for 2013. The San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition was formed 15 years ago to unite law enforcement agencies with community-based organizations to tackle issues presented by hate crimes in our community. Members of the Coalition include representatives from all law enforcement agencies in the county and members of many diverse community-based organizations.

This honor recognizes GUHSD’s ongoing efforts to develop innovative programs that are instrumental in reducing bullying and promote a positive and safe school climate.
