Patch at the Riverview Elementary Job Fair

We spent Friday morning talking to fourth and fifth graders about what we do- and they cleaned us out of our magnets, balloons and pens.

Santee Patch was hosted by the Riverview Elementary School in Lakeside during their job fair for 4th and 5th graders on Friday.

Several members of the community went to the Elementary school to teach the students about their careers, from banker to social worker and more. The students attend the job fair to learn about different careers, then choose what career they want to pursue when they attend Biz Town. Biz Town is a hands-on learning experience for the real world, a mock town where they can run businesses, purchase items using checks from a mock bank account, vote for mayor, etc. To learn more about Biz Town, visit www.ja.org.

Santee Patch was there to tell the kids about journalism online. From fire coverage to food reviews, the students learned that reporting is all about going out and experiencing the world, and then telling a good story about it.

Riverview Elementary School is an immersion school where all of the children learn English and Spanish, as well as Mandarin. The teachers switch between speaking English and Spanish to the class throughout the day.

The teachers described the Job Fair and Biz Town as important school programs that help students prepare for the future and provide hands-on "real world" experiences of economy and industry.
