Three Local High School Graduates Awarded $2,000 Scholarships

The students are from Santana, Steele Canyon and Westview high schools.

Three local students, including two from East County and one from North County, have been awarded scholarships by the Retired Employees of San Diego County.

Jordan Vargas of Santana High School won, as did Marco Russo of Steele Canyon High School and Isaac Becker of Westview High School, which is in San Diego, but is part of the Poway Unified School District.

The group – they will each receive a $2,000 award – will be honored before the county Board of Supervisors on June 18. Here are their accomplishments:

  • Jordan, the grandson of farm workers, will attend Yale University in the fall with the goal of a career in international relations. He posted a 4.76 GPA and raises money to provide birthday parties for children in orphanages.
  • Marco, a competitive swimmer, had a 4.31 GPA in high school and has volunteered more than 150 hours with school, church and community organizations. He plans to study business and real estate in college.
  • Isaac, a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship, is aiming for a career in mechanical engineering. The music aficionado also embraces math and science and was part of the California State Summer School at UCSD on the subjects.

The winners are grandchildren of retired county employees. There were five winners total; 28 applied. The other two recipients are from San Clemente and Texas.

More than $120,000 in scholarships have been awarded by the group since 1995.
