Milford, Connecticut – A 16-year-old high school student was stabbed to death the day of the junior prom. A 16-year-old classmate is in custody.
Several media outlets reported that students at the school said Maren Sanchez was stabbed to death by a boy she refused to go with to the prom. Police have not confirmed the information, and the suspect's name was being withheld because he is a juvenile.
Sanchez was attacked at about 7:15 a.m. in a hallway at Jonathan Law High School, The Hartford Courant reported, and part of the attack was witnessed by a staff member of the school. Sanchez was taken to Bridgeport Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 7:43 a.m.
"Her time with us was much too short but her spirit will be with us forever. I ask you to please join me in praying for Maren, her friends, her family and all of our school community as we cope with this horrific event," Jonathan Law High School principal Fran Thompson stated in an email to students, according to Tom Cleary at Scribble Live.
Sanchez was described as a popular and well-respected student. Video of Sanchez performing "Home" by Phillip Phillips at a school event is attached to this post.
Milford Mayor Ben Blake said Jonathan Law High School will be open and counseling services will be available throughout the weekend. "Our hearts go out to the family of Maren Sanchez, the 16 year old junior at Jonathan Law High School who passed away this morning, and to those also affected by this tragedy."
