Kiwanis and West Hills Key Club Clean Up Santee Roadsides

20 volunteers bagged more than several hundred pounds of trash and had to stop when they ran out of the large, heavy duty trash bags.

The West Hills Key Club with a group of Santee Kiwanis Club volunteers on Saturday, cleaned up trash in and around the open space and roadways between Town Center Parkway and the San Diego River as part of the city's Roadside Pride effort.

20 volunteers bagged more than several hundred pounds of trash and had to stop when they ran out of the large, heavy duty trash bags.

"This section of Cuyamaca Street gets a lot of foot and car traffic and, unfortunately, it is a magnet for trash," said Santee Kiwanis member Douglas Key.  "Hopefully it is outsiders and not Santee residents contributing to this mess."

The Santana High School Key Club, a Kiwanis affiliated high school service club, was responsible for a similar cleanup near Woodside Avenue about a month ago.

"It is heartening  to see kids of this age using their personal time and energy to do something of value for the broader community," wrote Kiwanis member Dan Bartholomew.

The Roadside Pride effort is a program the Kiwanis Club engages in with the city, which assigns a segment of roadway to interested groups for clean-up.
