Santana LEO Club Helps Paint U.S. Map Mural at Sycamore Canyon School

By Denise Wall, Santee LIONS

On Sunday June 23, the Santana High School Leadership, Experience, Opportunity (SHS LEO) club assisted Sycamore Canyon Elementary School with painting a United States mural on their campus to help kids learn the states in a fun way and to learn about the geography of the US by creating an interactive map.

The students will be able to make up games using the 50 states and teachers will be able to incorporate movement into their lessons with the large visual map.

The project has been in the works for a few months.  Sycamore Canyon's speech therapist's daughter had the large template and offered to the school for use.  The school district did the work to prepare the playground surface.  Volunteers did the painting.

Ms Jerelyn Lindsay, Sycamore Canyon Principal, was the project leader.  She organized volunteers from AT&T, parents, students and teachers as well as the SHS LEO club.

"AT&T Pioneers Volunteer group contacted me offering to paint the map," said Ms Lindsay. "They brought many volunteers and all the supplies last Sunday.  The only thing I had to do was to have some additional volunteers."

The mural is painted on the primary playground on the upper part of the campus (visible from Settle Road).

"It's a fun way to learn and to provide a colorful place to play and explore," said Sheryl Ford, Sycamore Canyon Elementary Teacher.
