Santee Relay for Life Moves Forward With New Event Chairs

John Morley and Robert Lloyd take over as event chairs for the 2012 relay that is about "celebrating, remembering and fighting back as a community."

The is moving forward full steam now that the annual event has two new leaders serving as event chairs, and they're no strangers to community volunteering. 

John Morley and , president and vice-president of the Santee Chamber of Commerce, took over as event chairs last week.

"It is a great organization that ... fighting this nasty illness. I am honored to be part of it," said Lloyd.

Morley's main interest is in firing up a dedicated group of behind the scenes volunteers, the Organizing Committee that guides the event to . The first Organizing Committee meeting will be held Tuesday night, if you're interested in volunteering on the Organizing Committee drop by for the meeting.

Relay for Life rules say that the event chair must switch every so often, so the face of the American Cancer Society in Santee, Dawn Gibbs, to pass the torch off to- and she found them.

The organizing committee for the relay will still meet at , Gibb's women's cancer boutique in Santee.

"I will provide support and assistance to those in need.  I will continue to be an advocate in my community.  I will participate in our Relay For Life and support it’s new Volunteer Event Chair in any way that I can.  And I will cherish the many friendships and gifts of the heart that I have been given these last two years," said Gibbs.

Gibbs wrote in a recent what the relay means: "The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Santee belongs to our community.  We are the American Cancer Society in our community.  We not only fundraise, but . We celebrate, we remember and we fight back as a community."

The relay continues to grow in Santee, , raising over $62,000 and we welcomed over 100 cancer survivors of all ages.
