Local Nonprofit Mama's Kitchen Kicks Off Bake Sale Fundraiser

Mama's Kitchen, which delivers meals to the sick, kicks off its annual bake sale fundraiser.

The San Diego nonprofit organization Mama's Kitchen, which delivers free meals to people affected by cancer, HIV and AIDS, kicked off its annual bake sale fundraiser on Monday.

"Mama's Pie in the Sky,'' now in its seventh year, features donated apple, pumpkin, pecan or no-sugar-added apple pies from some of the region's top pastry chefs, caterers and bakeries, according to spokeswoman Denise Scatena.

The pies cost $20 and can be ordered through Nov. 21 at mamspies.org, or by calling (619) 233-6262. Ordered pies will be ready for pick-up Nov. 23 at more than 20 sites throughout the county, including 18 Wells Fargo branches.

"The annual 'Mama's Pie in the Sky' pie sale provides an opportunity to check off one more thing from your Thanksgiving `to do' list and support out mission,'' said Alberto Cortes, executive director of the organization. "When you buy a pie, you provide nutritious meals, comfort and hope to fellow community members affected by AIDS or cancer.''

The organization hopes to sell 5,000 pies during the six-week sales period, which would raise about $100,000 to fund more than 35,000 meals, Scatena said.
