Photos: Coastal Cleanup at the Santee Lakes

The new Santee Lakes cleanup site is sparkling thanks to volunteers, largely made up of Girl Scouts.

About 8,000 San Diegans joined forces Saturday morning to spruce up the county's wetlands in the annual , with a good sized group combing the .

Local coordinators from I Love a Clean San Diego and San Diego Coastkeeper report that volunteers participated at 90 cleanup sites, setting a new record for number of locations, including the new Santee Lakes site.

The cleanup effort in Santee was largely led by local Brownie and troops that circled the lakes picking up trash.

While site totals are still coming in, coordinators estimate that local volunteers removed at least 100,000 pounds of debris countywide during the three hour event.

Unusual items reported by site captains across the county included: a cross bow, laptop and dentures.
