Sultans Have No Swat Against El Capitan Lefty in CIF Title Game

Junior Delanie Gourley throws three-hitter, with 13 strikeouts, to stifle Santana 4-1 at UCSD.

Santana ran into a buzz saw Saturday at the CIF San Diego Division III softball championships by the name of Delanie Gourley. The El Capitan High junior pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead the Vaqueros to their first softball title 4-1 at UC San Diego, where the scoreboards were out because of a campuswide power outage. “This is the best feeling ever, especially for our seniors,” Delanie was quoted as saying in a U-T San Diego report. “I was pumped (from the start), and we were all playing with the same amount of adrenaline.” The Sultans ended the season with a runner-up trophy and 28-8 record.
