Daily Transcript Recognizes Santee Lakes' 50 Years of Water Innovation

One of San Diego's premiere journals takes a look at how water shaped the city of Santee.

The is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and The Daily Transcript has published a colorful summary of the Lakes and how water has helped shape the city of Santee.

Starting with the 1935 flooding caused by the construction of the El Capitan Dam and moving right up to current day, the history lesson is a blast from the past. Other history includes how the city got its name (could easily have been named Cowles) and of course, why the Lakes were constructed and how has innovated water reclamation technology.

The story is laden with adjectives and metaphors of historical situations that aren't often considered, like the smell in the air for anyone living in the area when the Lakes were constructed.

"It must have been hard on the adjacent homeowners when the Santee Lakes Project commenced. Sort of like living downwind in Bay Ho before San Diego stopped dumping sewage in Mission Bay," wrote Daily Transcript columnist Larry Stirling.

The Transcript refers to the current state of the Lakes as "magnificent," and the progression of the city from a "whistles top" to the "thriving modern-day city of Santee."
