Center of Attention: Enticing Tables

The Santee business is offering love birds a chance to make their weddings distinctive with custom-made centerpieces.

Friends call her the pseudo child of Bob Villa and Martha Stewart. But for some brides and grooms, she's the one who helped make their wedding unique.

Valerie McCartney, owner of in Santee, has created centerpiece structures for two years. Her pieces, designed and made from scratch, have gained so much popularity among lovebirds that within three months she saw a profit.

"Every bride is looking for something unique—not something you can find at every wedding," she said. "The whole premise is you don't have to be a professional florist, you start with one of our structures and turn it into something unique by yourself."

And for wedding season, which has just begun, McCartney is hopeful she'll receive twice as many customers.

"We've increased labor and capital expenditures, and purchased new equipment [to prepare for wedding season]," she said. "San Diego is a relatively large wedding market and for brides who want to stretch their budget, they come to us."
