Kaiser Permanente Lays Off 530 Employees

The layoffs affect employees throughout Southern California.

One of the nation’s largest HMOs is laying off 530 employees in Southern California this weekend, including some in San Diego County, a company official confirmed Saturday.

Kaiser Permanente said the layoffs—constituting about eight-tenths of one percent of it employees—would be spread across its 65,700 employees and doctors working in offices and hospitals from Kern County to the Mexican border.

Under its union contracts, the laid-off employees who are in unions will get income and benefits for a year. Many may also be rehired next year, when Kaiser Permanente expects “significant membership growth.”

“Health care in America is in the midst of one of the most exciting and challenging times in its history, the firm said in a statement Saturday. “We have undertaken a series of cost-reduction initiatives to ensure we meet these changing dynamics, and they include some position eliminations.

“It is important to note that none of these position eliminations will in any way jeopardize the quality of patient care, which is always our primary focus,” the corporate statement said.

Nationwide, the health care industry is undergoing structural changes to adopt to the new federal Affordable Health Care Act—commonly called Obamacare.

Exact layoff locations were not available, a spokeswoman said, because some of the affected employees may be offered other vacant positions as it makes staffing adjustments next week.

A union official told the Inland Daily Bulletin that the laid-off employees will be able to take advantage of a retraining and education program that will keep them paid and insured for up to one year.

Cause training as an MD, or an RN are obtainable from the commercials between Jerry Springer and Dr. Phil? Good lord, wake up fools!!!!! Needing and filling positions are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Just wait, once solcialist care becomes implimented, be prepaired to wait and hope you are "viable" to justify that expensive surgery... Think I'm joking? Just wait, sheep....... A round about way of culling the herd.... Wake up, Sheep, for once.....

Sheepie, you sound paranoid and you are a Negative Nancy. Wonder if Kaiser is laying off people temporarily has something to do with this..."Nearly 13 million Americans will receive a rebate this summer because their insurance company spent too much of their premium dollars on administrative costs or CEO bonuses." http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/06/28/fact-sheet-affordable-care-act-secure-health-coverage-middle-class

You will see a significant decrease in Doctors practicing medicine, Hospitals closing down floors, massive lay offs on medical careers from this point on. For ALL of you that voted for Obama, this is what you asked for when you voted for him. Obamacare will do nothing but cause those who cannot afford insurance be forced to pay for it, physicians to no longer practice medicine and our Unemployment go sky high. You know what they say, "Be careful What You Ask For".

Really? What have I said that is untrue? Post all the quips you want. If you can't come up with something original, Please don't post. You are only making yourself look silly...

Where are your sources Kathy? It is great that you know more than the President of the United States. You must be a smart one! People don't listen to these doomers and gloomers who are just all around unhappy people. Get the facts http://www.whitehouse.gov/healthreform#healthcare-menu

Here is a thought... if we are the best country in the world, we should have been first to have affordable health care for all!

Sheepie, you say "post all of the quips I want," then say, "please don't post." Get the facts and stop with the negative opinions http://www.healthcare.gov/law/index.html

MH, Sorry, my "negative opinions" are the truth. I would like to borrow your rose colored glasses and see how "reality" is through your eyes. If you think for one second socialized medicine will be beneficial to the citizens of this country, you are sorely mistaken... Why are Canadians coming to the US for medical treatment? Because they are not "viable" or the time it would take to resolve the issue is not practicle, or life saving. Ever been to England? Ask them how great and wonderful NHS is..? But just keep beliving big Bro will comfort you from womb to tomb. Hope you don't need a hip or knee replacement... You may be deemed "too old" for the benefit. Laugh it up, its coming......
PwmCwzy November 19, 2012 at 05:00 AM
Yep I read it and understood it. Kaiser has agreed to pay $50,000 for an investigation that resulted in $5,000 in civil penalties and donate $500,000 to a charitable foundation. I really don’t consider imposing a $5,000 fine on a corporation the size of Kaiser is significant, sounds like a way to shut down a frivolous law suit and save legal fees. But being as educated as you are and able to read and speak English, I’m sure you, as an ardent Obamacare hater, do/will see it differently.
PwmCwzy November 19, 2012 at 05:05 AM
MH - The pity is that sheeple and Kathy will benefit from the Affordable Care Act, and so will all the other naysayers. Obama was re-elected so they have to find something to complain about.

Sheepie is right on the mark. This is the beginning of the biggest disaster this country has seen since the Civil War. It's a shame most Americans can't see the wolves in Sherpa clothing. The Takers have overrun the makers.

Sheepie and Moving to Montana (great place for you! They are more your people, great idea) your arguments are dated and not backed up by any reputable sources, but they are backed by anger and narcissism in believing that "You" pay for everyone else. Yawn, so boring, anyone actually good at debate? You lack of effective argument makes me pass out.

My, my we have a bunch of fortune tellers posting. I would like to know where you get your information from. Do you have a direct pipeline that you are not sharing? Newsflash !!! The Democrats won,the Republicans are "losers" & exceedingly poor ones at that ! They just can't grasp the fact that not only do the majority of their neighbors vehemently disagree with every thing they stand for,but that most of them despise them as well ! Let Rush & FOX News whip these old, angry & pathetic white folks into a foaming at the mouth fervor, their votes are meaningless & no one gives a damn what they think anymore ! Why would anyone want to improve our health care system,it appears to be dispatching Republican voters at a pretty good clip now & if it's working that well why fix it ?

Well you should be in a coma by now if I bore you that much, yet you keep responding? Sorry if the LA times is not reputable enough for you. Maybe that newspaper that looks like a comic strip, usatoday or the oracle John Stewart is more your speed? As for paying for everyone else, you must not pay healthcare premiums ( those went down, right...) they've only increased exponentially. You must not pay property taxes either, News flash for ya, it's NOT CHEAP! So let's see how you can educate me in your infinite wisdom and lead me to the dark side. I always knew the sheep don't like the truth....

We could, if government would get out of the way ... If we could elect to purchase a plan that jut covers hospitalization, accident and disease like cancer ... then you pay for your own regular care or join a medical group .. and pay for it out of a tax free health savings account ... but no ... government forces you to purchase coverages you don't want ... excess government regulation makes insurance too expensive and cumbersome ..
Jay Berman November 19, 2012 at 04:47 PM
Now we are going to have healthcare directed by government, run like the post office, losing money like Amtrak .... efficiency of the DMV .. lovely ...
Jay Berman November 19, 2012 at 05:00 PM
I can't wait until you Obama lovers get to experience government controlled healthcare ... I have a service related disability .. I use the VA system ... here in San Diego the system is much better than other areas ... you walk into the door of the clinic, there is a large photo of Obama ... lovely, most of the docs I have seen are foreign trained .. last one wasn't even licensed in California .. 2 times I needed a minor procedure, it was done by a medical student .. Records in the San Diego system are completely computerized .. the first person you see when you go for an appointment is the data collector ... there is a series of questions that the computer presents that they want you to answer, most are personal ... right into a government database indexed on your social security number .. I'm not bitching, it is decent .. but nothing like a private doctor ... it is pretty efficient ... I expect it to most likely remain the same as the private sector system self implodes on ObamaCare ... millions more coming into the system, going to the doctor for a hangnail as doctors quit and retire or open private boutique practices that don't take insurance ..

Measure S was about making IB comply with state law which gives cannabis patients the right to "safe & legal access" to their medication locally ! Making it more difficult to acquire their medication doesn't prevent a single resident of IB with a doctor's recommendation from acquiring & using all the marijuana they desire with impunity from prosecution ! Marijuana will be completely legal in California within the next two years & the illegal efforts by IB to defy state law will be as meaningless as they are contemptible ! I'm smoking a bowl of hash right now,my medicine cabinet is full & I haven't visited a dispensary since April ! He who laughs last laughs best, but I'm LMFAO at you right now !!! RATSJ November 20, 2012 at 07:21 AM
I see it this way....the health care reform will enable those who didn't have insurance or couldn't afford an office visit to now be able to get to a doctor. This is called preventative care and anything we can do to help prevent an illness or discover an illness in the early stages would eventually save on health costs. It just makes good sense to me .
BridgetBurns November 20, 2012 at 08:07 AM
RATSJ - It is not only "good sense", it is common sense.

I see it the same way. It's said "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Many organizations, like Kaiser, are doing an excellent job moving toward preventative care, early detection, more careful follow-up, excellent electronic record-keeping, etc. That's not true everywhere, of course. Making sense is often trumped by making cents. And the truly greedy are perfectly content making non-sense if there is profit in it.
