Wood n' Lips Open Mic Newsletter

Once a week local musicians of all ages meet in Santee to play music and enjoy the night.

Hi All,

We had a full house early on with a great audience and a slate of exceptionally talented performers.  A few of our new friends from the cruise even made it.

6:30 PM – Tim Woods – I got the evening rolling with Dwight Latham and Moe Jaffe’s “I’m My Own Grandpa”, Tom Paxton’s “The Marvelous Toy”, Jimmy Rogers’ “In the Jailhouse Now”, and Johnny Cash’s “My Grandfather’s Clock”.

6:45 PM – Kevin Krekelberg. with Cliff & John – played originals, the first Kevin did solo, called “Yesterday’s News”; then he had Cliff Niman and John Seever join him for “Oh, My God! (it’s been one of those days) and “It’s Time for Me to Go”; then his wife Lauren joined them for “The Lakeside Hotel”, a tune he wrote back in the seventies.

7:15 PM – Patty Hall– For Patty’s debut at Frubble she brought her banjo and played “Cluck Old Hen”; and her own “The Good Old Days”; then Gregory Martin Campbell joined her for “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down, Boys”; and “Hop Up Pretty Gals, Don’t Be Afraid”.

7:30 PM – Ray Owens– Returned for a second week to play for us; he played Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”; Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”; “One Tin Soldier” from Billy Jack; and Neil Young’s “Long May You Run”.

7:45 PM – Don & Audrey Anderson– The duo played John McCutcheon’s “Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”; Ken Graydon’s “Three-Quarter Time”; Jerry Rassmussen’s “A Hand Full of Songs” (recorded by Doofus); and Brian Bowers & Bob Danoffas’ “Friend for Life”.

8:15 PM – Cliff Niman & John Seever– Cliff dredged up an old civil war tune ??? “The House of the Rising Sun” with an old vibe (Who knew?); Cliff’s neighbors Kevin & Lauren joined them for Ian Tyson’s “Four Strong Winds”; and an amazing version of Phil Ochs’ “Changes”.

8:30 PM – Gregory Martin Campbell – Greg continued the string of great music with The Beatles’ “Mother Nature’s Son”; and “Blackbird” from the same album; “Because / Til There Was You” medley; and Gerry and the Pacemakers’ “Ferry Across the Mersey”.

8:45 PM – Becky Williams – Has a very pleasant voice and has been working on developing her guitar chops; she led off with Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe”; followed by Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter”; Dolly Parton’s “Backwoods Barbie”; the Johnny Cash and June Carter version of Tim Hardin’s “If I Were a Carpenter”; and June Carter’s “Ring of Fire”, with the audience joining in.

9:00 PM – Aram Perez Hadn’t joined us for almost exactly a year, so it was good to have him back.  He played what he called an “iffy guitar set” of David Gates’ “If”; Townes VanZant’s “If I Needed You”; Jose Feliciano’s “Que Sera”; a song he wrote many years ago called “This Guitar”; followed by John Denver’s “This Old Guitar”.

9:15 PM – Gregory Gross– Closed out what turned out to be an amazing evening with a great set of Jimmy Buffet’s “Come Monday”; The Eagles’ “Take it Easy”; and the Filk tune, Duane Elms’ “Don’t Push That Button”.  I joined him for a finale of Dale Evan’s “Happy Trails”.

Wow! What a night; let’s order up a few more like it.  It was one of those nights you would like to bottle and put on a shelf so you can take a sip of it now and then—or just sniff the cork.  Fine memories.

God Bless, and see you soon.
