View Finder: 9/11 Heroes Run at Mission Trails

Runners, walkers and bicyclists came from around the city to Mission Trails Park to take part in the 9/11 Heroes Run on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Sunday morning.

About 1,000 runners, walkers and bicyclists came from around the city to to take part in the on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Sunday morning.

The 5 kilometer race put on by the Travis Manion Foundation is also known as the 5k for the 9k, referring to the more than 9,000 soldiers, and counting, that have been lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The race was an international affair spanning 16 states, and with races in England, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Their website explains the run best:

"The 2011 9/11 Heroes Run is bringing communities together throughout the country this September 11th. Our goal is to never forget the sacrifices of all of the Heroes of September 11th - veteran, first responder, and civilian. We honor the fallen by challenging the living. This is a run for charity with proceeds going to support the communities who keep us safe."

The San Diego race was organized by Amy Looney, whose husband was killed in Afghanistan last year.

"The world has learned Americans are stronger and more resilient than our enemies expected,'' Looney said. "You can knock us down, but we're going to get right up again stronger than ever, with a passion for doing the right thing.''
