Air Force Capt. Colin Merrin of Santee Bows Out of Everest Climb

He had to leave the climb because of illness, but the rest of his team, made up of other service members, made it on May 19.

Air Force Capt. Colin Merrin did not make the summit of Mt. Everest with the group of servicemen who completed the climb May 19, reports KPBS.

The Santee resident had to back out during the journey because of a respiratory infection, a teammate reported.

A fellow climber wrote about their journey in a blog and credited Merrin for his “tough call:”

“It was a heart breaking moment to know he wouldn’t continue up with us,” Maj. Rob Marshall wrote, “but I was also terribly proud of him for making such a smart decision.”

It is the first time a team of active-duty service members have scaled Mt. Everest.
