Apparent Suicide Causes I-8 Lane Closure Near Pine Valley

A fatal plunge from the Pine Valley Bridge caused a lane closure this afternoon.

One westbound lane on Interstate 8 in East County was closed Tuesday afternoon as authorities investigated the death of a person who apparently committed suicide by jumping from the Pine Valley Creek Bridge.

The fatality was reported shortly after 11 a.m., Sheriff's Lt. Dave Brown said.

The person who plunged from the 450-foot-tall structure, which is officially named the Nello Irwin Greer Memorial Bridge, remains unidentified. The victim's vehicle was found parked alongside the freeway, the Lieutenant said.

A Sheriff's helicopter crew retrieved the body from the deep canyon.

All freeway lanes in the area were open again by 1:45 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
