Update: Hannah Anderson Safe, Suspect Jim DiMaggio Killed in Idaho

It's "the most wonderful feeling I think I've ever felt," said Hannah's grandmother.

FBI officials out of Salt Lake City and Idaho authorities confirmed DiMaggio's death at a news briefing in Cascade just after 6:30 p.m., but could say little else because an FBI shooting review team from Washington D.C. is headed west to evaluate the scene.

They said such a review is a routine matter when an agent is involved in a shooting. Those at the news briefing would not say how the campsite was spotted or if DiMaggio fired on police and agents before he was killed. 

There were no reports of injuries to any of the searchers, said Ada County Sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Dearden, who added that Hannah is at an undisclosed hospital for physical and psychological evaluation. She was removed from the campsite by helicopter.

“Our top priority is to make sure she is OK in every way possible,” Dearden said.

Gore called the massive effort to find Hannah “an unprecedented response” that involved federal agencies, San Diego investigators, Idaho police and authorities pulled in from other segments of law enforcement.

He credited the media with the spreading the word about the abduction, because in Idaho as of Wednesday the Amber Alert in effect in California and three other states had not yet been declared there. 

But nationwide news coverage led to the person on horseback who had encountered DiMaggio early Wednesda to contact authorities after he returned from a remote area known as the Frank Church River of No Return. 

It is regarded as one of the most remote areas of wilderness in the country, a place where even local officials had stressed would be treacherous and difficult to search.

But agencies throughout the western United States pitched in, Gore said, including law enforcers from San Francisco and Portland. They joined federal agencies that aside from the FBI, included US marshals and Customs and Border Protection.

The news of Hannah's recovery started to break widely when the Ada County Sheriff's office tweeted at about 5:15 p.m.: “Hannah is safe. Stay tuned for more update.”

DiMaggio is accused of killing Christina Anderson, Hannah's mother, and Ethan Anderson, 8, her brother, whose bodies were found in his burned-out home in Boulevard Sunday.

As happy as Britt is about Hannah's impending return, she has still lost her daughter and one of her two grandchildren.

"We're relieved, however now we have to face burying my daughter and my grandson who was murdered and that is something we'll take a long time to deal with," she said.

“The positive note is Hannah is coming home,” she said, while sharing an embrace with her sister Jennifer Willis. “That's all we've been hoping for.”

An Amber Alert for the missing children was issued Monday evening, though by Friday authorities revealed that extensive testing had determined that the remains of a boy found in the home were Ethan's. 

Family members and loved ones hosted vigils Tuesday and Friday and said they were confident their prayers would be answered. They were mystified as to DiMaggio's motives, however.

Friends of Hannah's have said in recent weeks the dear and trusted family friend had made overtures to her and she had become increasingly uncomfortable with him.

A further note that gave Hannah's loved ones cause for concern leading into Saturday – a friend of his told CNN that Aug. 10 is the anniversary of DiMaggio's father's suicide.

It appears now that Jim DiMaggio has died the same day.
