Santee’s Brian Roberts Gets New Term on Parole Board Worth $111,000

Gov. Jerry Brown reappoints a former commander in the county Sheriff's Department.

Brian Roberts of Santee will continue to help decide whether to release prison inmates on parole. And he’ll be paid an annual salary of $111,845 for the job.

In the role, Roberts also will have power to revoke parole and evaluate sexually violent predators and mentally disordered offenders.

On Friday, Gov. Jerry Brown reappointed Roberts to the Board of Parole Hearings, a move that requires Senate confirmation.

Roberts, a 59-year-old former commander in the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, has served on the board since 2006. He now is its deputy commissioner.   

Roberts was one of three people named or reappointed to the board.

Others named Friday were:

  • Marisela Montes, 58, of Sacramento—a consultant at the California Prison Industry Authority since 2011. She had several roles at the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from 2006 to 2009, including deputy director of adult institutions and chief deputy secretary of adult programs. Montes was deputy director of administration at Caltrans from 1999 to 2006. 
  • Ali Zarrinnam, 37, of Encino—who has served as deputy commissioner at the Board of Parole Hearings since 2009. He served as a panel attorney at the California Parole Advocacy Project from 2004 to 2009, as partner at the Law Offices of Zarrinnam and Chakur from 2003 to 2007 and as an attorney at Finnegan and Diba from 2002 to 2003.
