Santana Wins GUHSD Academic League Championship

Two teams that did Santee proud and beat the rest of the GUHSD League, faced off, with Santana going home the victor.

Last week, the and varsity , and with 9-and-1 records, the two teams went head on Wednesday afternoon in the library of Grossmont High School for first place in the district.

After a close, back-and-forth game, Santana came out ahead, with a final score of 84-76. This is the second year in a row that Santana has taken first place in the Grossmont Union High School District.

Parents, friends and Academic League aficionados packed the library, and officials were even in attendance.

Academic League is a quiz bowl type competition with fast-paced questions ranging from arts, math, history, government- just today questions ranged from topics like tangent functions to the Jabberwocky. The format is one toss up question followed by a bonus three part themed question.

West Hills mostly maintained a lead for the first 15 minutes of play, but momentum switched when the first timeout was called with ten minutes left, and the score: West Hills 60, Santana 49.

After the break, Santana quickly answered two in a row and pulled ahead, never to lose ground again. West Hills called a final timeout with three minutes left in hopes of turning the tables, but were only able to close the gap by four points by the end.

Santana is now off to the countywide Academic League finals.

West Hills Coach Cheri Gabler and Santana Coach Brooke Crocker admitted after the game that the teams were a bit of Santee rivals and agreed it was a fun, tight game, that could have gone either way- though this time, it went to Santana.

Following the play-off match, were two all-star matches and the third annual Academic League spaghetti dinner and awards ceremony.
