Friday Night Lights: Prep Football, Week 7

League action begins Friday night for most of the high school football teams in San Diego County, but the Central League already is into its third week of play. A league champion may very well emerge from the Kearny at Coronado game since both teams are ahead of the pack at 2-0.

The Islanders (5-1) are led by quarterback Austin Denson, who has 13 touchdown passes and averages more than 150 yards through the air each game, though he can run the ball as well, carrying for more than 60 yards a game, with six rushing touchdowns. Kearny (4-2) quarterback Shawn Boose, another dual threat, has similar numbers.

Other interesting matchups include an East County battle between Grossmont (4-0-1) and Valhalla (4-1) in a Grossmont Hills League opener hosted by the Foothillers, and an Avocado West opener in which La Costa Canyon (3-2) visits crosstown foe Carlsbad (4-1).
