A graduate of Grossmont High School, Grossmont College, and San Diego State, Bill Dickens is truly home grown. He began his journalism career reporting on East San Diego County high school sports for the El Cajon Daily Californian in March 1968.<br><br>During his more than 42-year career – 24 as a sports editor -- Dickens covered three Super Bowls, two World Series, John Wooden&#39;s last NCAA Final Four, and Ken Norton&#39;s victory over Ali at the San Diego Sports Arena. He also chronicled the careers<br>of numerous local sports standouts, including NBA MVP Bill Walton and NFL MVP Brian Sipe from the preps to the pros.<br><br>Among Dickens&#39; greatest thrills was covering the San Diego Chargers&#39; home and away games during the Air Coryell years. He covered the Padres for 14 years and is a lifetime member of the Baseball Writers Association of America. During his lengthy tenure<br>Dickens also covered San Diego State University football, and earned a reputation as &#34;The Fearless Forecaster&#34; for his weekly East County prep football columns – first for the now defunct Daily Californian, and presently for EastCountySports.com.<br><br>A winner of the Sigma Delta Chi San Diego County News Award, Dickens is listed as one of &#34;East San Diego County&#39;s 20th Century Hometown Heroes&#34; by local author Gary Marchinke. He received the Grossmont Conference Outstanding Service Award, the American Legion Post 282 Community Service Award, was a recipient of the CACC&#39;s &#34;News Media PRO Award,&#34; and served as sports information director of Grossmont College for 12 years. He has been a contributing writer for several magazines, including Sports Digest, Prep Athlete, Baseball Hobby News, and San<br>Diego Magazine.
